The government of Brazil will offer inmates in the crowded Brazilian federal penitentiary system a new way to shorten their sentences: four days less for every book they read.
Prisoners in four federal institutes holding some of Brazil's most notorious criminals will be able to read up to 12 literary readings as well as works of philosophy, science or classics to decrease their sentence with maximum 48 days each year.

Inmates will have four weeks to read each book and write an essay on it. The essay must "make correct use of paragraphs, be free of corrections, use margins and legible joined-up writing".
A special committee will decide which prisoners are eligible to participate in the program "Redemption through Reading".

Inmates can leave prison more enlightened and with a enlarged vision of the world; so, hopefully, each of them becomes a better person.

Is it a good model to be followed?
