It is originated from the English National Library and there were some precedents in Hungary as well.
Recruiting members to the circle of supporters of the Zoo and offering boxes to the theatre-goers should be mentioned as Hungarian initiatives to popularize certain fields of life and find people who are ready to support the Hungarian institutions.

The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library started its ’adoption project’ influenced by the ideas mentioned above eleven years ago.

The first meeting was organized in the autumn of 1995. We invited some well-known artists, town leaders, media men and writers who adopted a book for some money and justify their choice. The meeting was just like an amusing Hungarian class: talking about writers, emotions and experiences related to the chosen books.
Besides contribution the adoption has a message, indicated by 'Ex libris' stuck in the book, for the readers - it is highly recommended for everybody to read.

Now, in 2007, we can say that adoption has been a popular project for 12 years.
