British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural and educational relations. The British Council Hungary through the GatewayUK collections provides reference material to answer enquiries and other sources supporting language learners and teachers of English.



The GatewayUK offers you:



Collection of English language resource material for teachers and learners of English: course books, teacher’s books, workbooks, talking books, educational and informative tourist videos and a selection of contemporary British literature that can be borrowed.

Periodicals, as well as publications issued by the Foreign Commonwealth Office

Take-away tourist information brochures and maps of Great Britain published by Visit Britain (the British Tourist Authority)




Free Internet access to:

On-line British sources
A series of CD-ROMs helping individuals learning English language and providing tourist information
Specialist e-Newsletters edited by the British Council Headquarters
Remotely accessible databases (please feel free to ask our librarians how to use them)


Reference books about:

General information on the UK – British social life – politics – economics – arts – science – environment & heritage, etc.

Studying in the UK – British higher and further education – English language courses – summers jobs & voluntary working possibilities

We are pleased to inform our visitors that the collection of the British Council Library and Information Center has been donated to the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. After it is processed, the material of the collection can be used and borrowed by the readers from October.
The handover ceremony was held at the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library (Budapest VIII. Reviczky u. 1.).

David Martin, director of the British Council and Dr. Péter Fodor, director of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library welcomed the guests.
John Nichols, UK ambassador to Hungary and Dr. Gábor Demszky, mayor of Budapest opened the new facility.

The programme featured Gergely Litkai, comedian, and students from the Trefort Ágoston Teacher Training Secondary School and the Városligeti Hungarian-English Bilingual Primary School.


The materials of the received collection including not more than 10.000 items - books, AV-cassettes, DVDs and video cassettes - and the relevant services will be available in locations agreed by the British Council:


English language learning and ELT materials, audio-visual documents (videos, DVDs) in the Media Library (Médiatár);

contemporary British literature, together with English language literature in the Browsing Area (Böngészde) next to our GatewayUK Information Point;


Access to information on UK educational products available in Hungary and in the UK (examinations, etc.) and other materials on contemporary UK are also provided there;

Direct access to BC web-based resources via the computer donated by the British Council;

Items for professionals will be available in the professional book section.
